George Birch, Founder and Business Lead, Oyster Heaven
Oyster Heaven is honoured to have received the 2024 Neptune Award, recognising our innovative solution to accelerate oyster reef restoration and our contribution to healthier, more resilient oceans with our unique methodology and impact-based business model.
Enhancing Ocean Resilience
Oysters are nature’s ecosystem engineers. Their reefs act as natural breakwaters, reducing coastal erosion and providing vital habitats for marine life. Each oyster can filter up to 200 litres of water daily, improving water quality by removing excess nutrients and sediments, preventing harmful algal blooms.
However, oyster populations have plummeted globally, with many regions seeing over 85% declines due to overharvesting, habitat destruction, and the effects of climate change. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, native oysters are functionally extinct in the North Sea.
By restoring these keystone species, we are not only directly contributing to healthier marine ecosystems but also promoting ocean resilience and protecting coastal ecosystems.

Our solution – The Mother Reef
At the heart of our approach is the Mother Reef, a scalable, low-cost substrate designed to become the essential scaffolding for oysters to grow on. Made of just clay, the Mother Reef’s texture and structure provide the perfect surface for oyster larvae to settle, while creating habitat for hundreds of marine species to thrive. Each Mother Reef planted in the sea is home to at least 100 oyster spats, becoming part of a 4 million oyster reef, enabling rapid reef development that is both ecologically meaningful and economically efficient.
The Mother Reef’s simplicity ensures its production is feasible globally. Its compact design allows for transport on standard pallets, streamlining logistics and enabling large-scale restoration efforts while maintaining cost efficiency.

Oyster Reefs as a Nature Based Solution
The advantages of oyster reef restoration are undeniable, but how can we make this effort financially scalable and, even more, a smart investment?
Oyster reefs provide a suite of invaluable ecosystem services, including water filtration, nitrogen management, and coastal protection. Additionally, a restored four-million-oyster reef supports astonishing biodiversity, attracting over 466 different crawling and swimming species and tens of thousands of microbiological species.
Our impact-driven business model harnesses these services to deliver tangible benefits to organizations. By restoring oyster reefs, we offer supply chain resilience services to industries reliant on healthy ecosystems. This approach generates revenue to fund the creation of new, self-sustaining oyster reefs, creating a snowball effect of ecological growth that continues indefinitely.
The benefits extend far beyond the ocean. Restored reefs support coastal communities that depend on fishing and tourism, and provide natural defences against storm surges. These resilient ecosystems are increasingly critical in the face of climate change, offering a buffer against the growing frequency of extreme weather events.

Looking Ahead
The Neptune Award allows us to expand our work and scale up our efforts in the United States while we continue refining our methodologies.
With a focus on affordable and effective restoration technologies, we remain committed to our shared mission with the Ocean Exchange: improving ocean health and resilience.

George Birch is the founder of Oyster Heaven. His background is unusually in both a mix of marine and terrestrial conservation and financial management. Having spent some time at the Blue Marine Foundation where he became disappointed with the constant struggle for funding, he then spent 6 years working for Janus Henderson. At this $374Bn AUM asset manager he was one of two people responsible for the sustainable investment workstream. Oyster Heaven was born from a desire to see traditional investment move towards ocean conservation and regeneration, blending together these two diverse experiences. His MBA at Rotterdam Erasmus provided him with the tools and skills needed to set up the professional structures around his concept.
